Summary

This source provides a reference guide on inclusive design principles that can be implemented into the product development of User Accounts. Divided into three distinct sessions, this resource begins with providing an informative reference for understanding issues related to LGBTQ+ inclusivity, and why this is an issue that should be addressed. The designing section gives concrete design strategies and examples to understand where to begin to design inclusively, and how this may look. Lastly, or resource gives steps on how to take this newly learned information into action and bringing this information to stakeholders within your company. This resource can be read cover to cover, or used as a reference.

Background

The standard taxonomy for user profiles includes collecting information regarding personal data (i.e name, age, etc.) and preferences (i.e language). To inform this research, authors first asked; what can we make of this user data and are the questions asked accurately representing users?

Consequences of misrepresenting users have large implications for digital product companies trying to expand its user base, or at least make users feel like they belong. These feelings of online or digital exclusion can add to already existing offline hardships for those who are gender or sexually diverse, presenting issues in mental and physical health.

Outlining the best practices of how to implement inclusive user profiling on digital/computing systems for the LGBTQ+ community, the main research question asks:

***How might we ensure product managers and designers are able to easily upskill with up to date, accurate information on inclusive design, focused on LGBTQ+ communities*?**

****Through this guide, authors hope to reduce the cognitive & emotional labor that comes with learning and embedding empathy in human centered design for digital products.

This playbook is segmented into Understanding, Designing, and Implementing.

Understanding

We look to existing knowledge in related industries and topics to inform our playbook’s users – product managers and design teams – about why designing with LGBTQ+ users in mind is important. We include an overview of educational resources, terminology, and best practices so that designers are prepared to navigate the next two sections of our playbook to design and implement these inclusive changes.

Designing

We look to leaders in the design field for LGBTQ+ inclusivity as examples of frameworks and new processes teams can apply to their products. These examples include research-backed approaches to collecting SOGI data and examples of how successful LGBTQ+ products achieved their inclusivity goals, including guidance on when LGBTQ+ inclusivity should be discussed in the development process.
