Level Set: What does Inclusion Mean?

For LGBTQ+ Users, Inclusion means the following:

“It's kind of like a feeling right?”

“If diversity was respected.”

“Being really open and wanting to you know, hear people's experiences, and not put people in boxes.”

“It would definitely be when everyone feels represented or doesn't feel excluded.”

“Inclusion is like that extra step. But it's not necessarily the final step.

Turning to Product Developers—What Does Inclusion Mean for Them?

For some, it’s about the making the best product possible:

“I think it means considering the full range of ways that someone might interact with the product. Their gender, their age, their culture, what's their first language?”

For others, it’s about welcoming new and current users:

“It is really making sure that all of our users, not just, you know, 80% or 90%—but 100% of our users are comfortable using the product and that our product is like meeting some sort of unmet need for them."

Overall, it should be a mix of both:

“[Inclusion] is curious and asks questions - it doesn’t mean that people can’t be different, it’s more that there’s an opportunity to recognize that some people have a different experience and perspective without forcing them to state that need.”
